Business License & Sales Tax Information

The Town of Simla does not require a business license for established businesses with the Town of Simla. Any business, established or transient, participating in sales of products shall register with the State of Colorado Department of Revenue and remit applicable sales tax based on the location of the point of sale. The Town of Simla is a Statutory Town and does not self collect sales tax. The combined sales tax rate for the Town of Simla is 7.9%, Sate of Colorado 2.9%, Elbert County 1% and Town of Simla 4%.

Businesses operating in the Town of Simla and the State of Colorado shall register with the State of Colorado Secretary of State.

Transient Sales Permit

Any person transacting any business or selling activity shall obtain from the Town Clerk a permit before engaging in any such selling or soliciting activities. This permit shall be referred to as a ” transient sales permit”

  • The applicant must be at least eighteen (18) years of age
  • Each sales representative of the permitted business must have a copy of the permit on his/her person

Lodging Occupation Tax

Effective July 1, 2022, the Town of Simla requires a occupation tax on the provision of lodging upon every person or business that furnishes any hotel room, motel room, lodging room, motor hotel room, bred and breakfast room, guesthouse room, guest ranch room, mobile or manufactured home, recreational vehicle within a recreational vehicle park, cabin or similar accommodation for consideration for less than one (1) month or thirty (30) consecutive days within the Town in the amount of $6.50 per day, per occupied lodging room or accommodation. (Ord 326, 1-4-2022)

Every lodging business shall remit the lodging occupation tax to the Simla Town Clerk on or before the tenth day of each month.

Liquor License

All provisions for liquor licensing are in accordance with state statutes and liquor laws within the Town. All applications for licenses are to submitted to the Town Clerk. The Town Clerk shall issue all licenses granted by the Town upon a completed application being filed, payment of all required fees, hearings and final approval by the local and the state licensing authority.

Getting Started
  • Any business interested can pick up liquor license permit packet for Town Hall. The packet will contain all forms required to obtain a liquor license, a check list to use to insure all required documents are being submitted back to the Town Clerk and an guide outlining each step of the permitting process.

    • Applications will not be considered unless all questions are fully answered. If a question is not applicable, write N/A.  If the answer is none, write none.  All supporting documents must be submitted and correspond exactly with the name of the applicant.  The required fees must be included with the application (refer to attached fee schedule). Incomplete applications will not be accepted.

      All documents must be fully executed showing required signature and dates. Items that are contingent upon receipt of the liquor license should include a contingency clause.

      Discrepancies found between your application materials and background checks performed by the Clerk will be included in the Clerk’s report to the Board of Trustees, the Local Licensing Authority, during the liquor license hearing. Ensure that you are thorough, complete and consistent in listing your criminal history. You may order a criminal history report for a small fee from the Colorado Bureau of Investigations website at www.cbirecordscheck.com.
