On Monday, September 5th at 1:00 p.m, the Class of 2017 will line-up to take their place in the long running tradition of the Annual Labor Day Senior Auction.
Each an individual, and yet, the event will echo common themes witnessed, before;
The assembled community will clap and call out encouragement to each senior, as they saunter, skip, walk or trudge towards the auction block.
The extroverts, actors and class clowns will ham it up, doing their part to drive the bidding as high as they can.
The introverts, shy and serious minded souls will stand quietly, gratefully acknowledging by smile or nod, the bidder who has saved them the humiliation of standing center stage for a single moment longer than tradition calls for.
The Auctioneer, will, by turns, entertain, chastise and encourage, doing his best to get top dollar in exchange for helping hands, all while holding the crowd to the bounds of propriety and kindness, because, after all, we will be assembling for this event, again, next year, and we don’t want to spoil the fun, do we?
Afterwards, those who remember, either fondly or with a cringe, their time spent on the block, will clap the newest official members of the community, who faced the Rite of Passage and deliver the ‘speech’:
“Well Done! Did you see his face when I brazened in with that bid and he blinked? What? Ah, naw, don’t you worry about it. Money well spent, and already formulating my plan to best him next year….Hey, did I tell you about the year I graduated? Man, the bidding wars were brutal that year, let me tell you…”
